2015    Kennel Cough Info:

There are 7 strains of Bordetella.  The Vaccinations cover 2 of the most contracted strains

Parainfluenza virus can also be the culprit, when dogs come down with a cough, the only way to determine this is through blood work

It is passed through Nose to Nose contact, air borne, and water dishes

The dog will show signs of infection, 3-9 days after exposure

It is unclear if they are contagious during the incubation time, like kids are with chicken pox

The cough last typically 7-14 days

The cough can range from a light “chuffing” to a “barking, gagging” cough.

Honey, chicken soup broth, has been suggested to sooth the throat

Vets prescribe Codeine for unproductive cough , no mucus being coughed up

Productive coughs may need antibiotics

Although Vet care isn’t always necessary, if the dog is not eating and lethargic, he should be seen by his doctor

It was suggested that your dog should be away from dog friends for an extra week after the cough has stopped.

AS A KENNEL:

We do our best to be well ventilated during, and dog areas as clean as possible, with all of the dirty feet.  Water dishes washed and freshened often

Unfortunately we are not able to predict if a dog has had exposure until a cough develops

If a cough develops. We will ISOLATE them the BEST we can. Monitor their health, and possibly take a trip to the vets.  We will contact. Your emergency number.

Unfortunately, Kennel Cough is active during certain times of year, and is very contagious. We will do our best to minimize exposure, and we will communicate to families if we have an active case of Cough in the Kennel before you come.
